7 Days of Election Week: What’s At Stake Here?
This is not like any election that’s happened before
Today, I had a conversation with a relatively apolitical individual who asked me what I would do if Trump wins, and when I essentially answered that it’d be the end of our country as we know it and that it would be dangerous, they disagreed. They asked, “Isn’t it just kind of a mindset?”
Also today, I spoke with someone else who claimed that politics are just politics, and they are not life-threatening but rather just a system that we’ve upheld for this long. And that if our candidate loses, we shouldn’t take it so personal or act like it’s the end of the world.
Both people had my blood boiling at their ignorant comments. (It’s no coincidence that they both also come from highly privileged demographics.) I should’ve had a comeback prepared, but I was surprisingly speechless. All I could do was affirm that this election is, indeed, dire, and cite some of the issues that make it so.
Let’s discuss what makes this election so serious, and what’s at stake if American’s don’t decide to vote on the side of democracy.
